6250260580_4d03ff9f5c_zAs you know, gaming company Zynga laid off employees last week and shut down a few of its offices right before its quarterly earnings call. Well, Zynga has pissed off the online group Anonymous, and it's quite serious. Here's a video just released by them, discussing exactly what it plans to do and why. CNet is also reporting on this story, and we're actively checking to see if this is a legitimate maneuver. What is a Good Society? Taxation and Happiness ? SPSP

by Shige Oishi, University of Virginia

What is a good society? What is an ideal society? Every four years, the presidential election makes Americans think of this philosophical question. In the end, the choice of president reflects which America is the ideal America: the (pseudo-) meritocratic, winner-take-all, ?strong? America or the egalitarian, ?compassionate? America.

One of the central debates to this end is concerned with taxation: who should pay and how much? President Obama thinks that the rich should pay more, whereas Governor Romney does not. Beyond the rhetoric of ?tax relief? versus ?tax cut?, there is one fundamental aspect missing from the debate on taxation: namely, what is the purpose of taxation to begin with?

Of course, the main purpose of taxation is to pay for public and common goods. In a modern society, residents expect to have access to clean water and air, reliable roads, primary education, parks and green space, personal safety, and services such as garbage pick-up, sewage disposal, and recycling. The government, both local and federal, is responsible for the basic infrastructure, so that its citizens can live healthy lives.

Even a libertarian might agree that people?s quality of life would suffer if residents do not have reliable police, clean water, safe roads, good schools, or garbage pick-up and recycling, and that public and common goods are necessary. Ultimately, then, the optimal taxation system is the system that allows the society to function well, while minimizing the burden (tax) to its citizens.

One way we can decide what the taxation system is optimal is to measure the quality of public and common goods across various societies with different taxation systems, and identify the tax system that maximizes the quality of public and common goods. Where do you see the best public transportation, public education, public space, and social welfare?

Another way to address the issue of the best taxation policy is to see which citizens are the happiest. If the taxation is to provide good public and common goods to citizens, and if providing good public and common goods is important to the quality of citizens? lives, then we might as well measure citizen?s perceived quality of life directly, and identify the taxation system in which citizens are the most satisfied with their lives in general.

Uli Schimmack (U of Toronto), Ed Diener (U of Illinois), and I took the latter approach, and examined whether a certain taxation policy was associated with the happiness of the nations. Considering the main political debate has been between progressive taxation (the rich pays the higher rate of tax) and flat taxation (everyone pays the same rate of tax), we examined the relation between the degree of progressive taxation and the average happiness of citizens across 54 nations (see Oishi, Schimmack, & Diener, 2012, Psychological Science for details).

The bottom line: The residents of the nations with more progressive taxation were happier than those of the nations with less progressive taxation. The correlation coefficient was non-trivial: r = .33 with general life satisfaction and r = .46 with daily positive experiences (e.g., enjoying, smiling, doing something interesting, feeling well-rested).

The nations with the most progressive taxation among the 54 nations were Sweden (the top income bracket?s tax rate is 57%, whereas the lowest income bracket?s tax rate is 0%, i.e., a 57% difference), the Netherlands (52% difference), and Japan (45% difference).? The U.S. ranked #34 among 54 nations with 20% difference (the top income bracket rate is 35%, the lowest is 15%). The nations with the least progressive taxation were Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia and other countries that have flat tax rates. The first observation is that rich Americans do not pay as much as rich Swedish, Dutch, or Japanese people in absolute terms as well as relative terms (relative to non-rich). So, the argument that rich Americans are already paying too much seems inaccurate ?at least from a global perspective.

Some might worry that the ?official? tax rate is different from the ?actual? tax rate (the tax that residents actually pay after various deductions). We checked, therefore, the ?effective? tax rate (published by OECD, which is close to the ?actual? tax rate). The results were virtually the same (r = .36 with general life satisfaction, r = .46 with daily positive experiences).

Of course, the above correlations are, well, simple correlations. Thus, third variables could account for this association. To our surprise, however, progressive taxation was not associated with GDP per capita (r = .15) or income inequality, Gini coefficient (r = .13). Statistically controlling for these variables did not reduce the original correlations.

More interestingly, the degree of progressive taxation was associated with higher levels of satisfaction with public and common goods (r = .54, p < .01). Finally, we showed that the association between progressive taxation and the subjective well-being of the nations was mediated (explained) by citizens? satisfaction with public and common goods. That is, the citizens of the nations with progressive taxation were more satisfied with public and common goods such as transportation, education, and clean water, and also satisfied with their lives in general and reported smiling, enjoying life, being well-rested, and doing something interesting on a daily basis.

Some readers might also wonder if our findings mean that the bigger the government, the better (another important political issue in the U.S.). We checked whether larger government (higher % of GDP spent on the government) was also associated with greater satisfaction with public and common goods and greater life satisfaction and well-being in general. To our surprise, that was NOT the case. The government spending as a percentage of GDP was NEGATIVELY associated with general life satisfaction (r = -.46) and daily positive experiences (r = -.45): the greater the government spending as a percentage of GDP, the LOWER citizens? life satisfaction and positive daily experiences were (FYI, the U.S. is relatively a ?small? government at this point, ranked #49 out of 73 nations in government spending per GDP).

So, the second observation from our analyses was that it is not the amount of government spending per se, but the progressive taxation that is associated with higher levels of well-being. I suspect that the greater spending is not always translated into better public or common goods, in part because some governments spend a lot of? money on public and common goods, but due to various factors (labor cost, pension, bribes, who knows?), that type of spending does not result in better roads, better transportation, better police, better housing or better education. For some reason, the nations with progressive taxation are doing better in the public and common goods department (the ?why? is an important future research question).

Going back to the presidential debate on taxation, I wish President Obama and Governor Romney debated about the tax policy in the context of citizens? happiness. There are relevant scientific data and findings here. When our paper was published in Psychological Science this January, a Japanese journalist from NHK (Japanese version of BBC) called and asked me ?Has your paper changed the discussion of the tax policy in Congress?? I must admit that was the most astonishing question that I have ever received from a journalist. I just laughed and said ?No way!? I bet no one on Capitol Hill has ever heard about our paper on taxation and happiness. I have never heard any politicians talk about our paper, let alone newspapers or news magazines seriously talking about our findings in the context of the presidential debate. ?I wish our paper had such an impact on real politics! Maybe someday?

CKY 4 Latest And Greatest (2003) Movie Review
Released : March 25th, 2003
Reviewed : Oct. 23rd, 2012
Genre : Comedy

Story (from IMDB) :
A difference from this CKY movie compared to the other is this one is on a rather higher budget. Throughout the duration of the film, we see the usual suspects, Bam, Bran, Ryan, Raab Himself, Rake Yohn, Art Webb 1986 and the others, jumping from moving cars, out of third story parking lot windows and all the other crazy things they could come up with. There are also the normal skating sets put in for all you boarders out there!

Review :

CKY movies were ?Jackass? before Jackass was made really. It consists of the crew from Viva La Bam in their early days doing stunts. messing around , and of course it has some skateboarding shots put in it.

Now this film has a wide mix of stuff in it. You get the stunts including barrel rolls, the shopping carts, jumping off roofs and from moving car to moving car among other. The skateboard videos and a few short videos of Mike Valley being the hulk that he is and fighting. You also get some down right disgusting stuff in here. Really what might be the standout moment of this dvd is the scene where Rabb Himself leans against a restaurant window in the middle of a busy street and then proceeds to poop all over and down the window. The shock value from the people eating are priceless as is the shot of what he actually did. That along makes the dvd.

You also get a few music videos by GnarKill! where Brandon Dicamillo shows off the fact that even when messing around he is just offbeat funny and not a bad vocalist. You get the cameos from the usual people as well like CKY and Evil Jared and Jimmy Pop from Bloodhound Gang.

Even with the low budget quality from this it still shines out as being almost nonstop laughs. If you like Jackass or any of the stars from it or the spinoffs then you will enjoy this.

Score :

7.5/10

The systematic destruction of American higher education: 5 easy ...

The on-going effort to destroy America?s public (tax-supported) services is being pushed hard by the Right, and education is right in the cross-hairs: an educated populace is harder to fool and to manipulate, and the Right doesn?t like that: the educated keep asking pesky questions and arguing from evidence and so on. It?s intolerable. Plus they don?t simply accept authority.

Moreover, a lot of money is spent on education, and private industry would like to have that money. So education is first recast as a ?business,? and then the calls to privatize start to be made: cut costs by outsourcing (only the costs are not cut, but the money is diverted and the services are degraded in the name of increasing profits).

A few years back, Paul E. Lingenfelter began his?report?on the defunding of public education by saying, ?In 1920 H.G. Wells wrote, ?History is becoming more and more a race between education and catastrophe.? I think he got it right. Nothing is more important to the future of the United States and the world than the breadth and effectiveness of education, especially of higher education. I say especially higher education, but not because pre- school, elementary, and secondary education are less important. Success at every level of education obviously depends on what has gone before. But for better or worse, the quality of postsecondary education and research affects the quality and effectiveness of education at every level.?

In the last few years, conversations have been growing like gathering storm clouds about the ways in which our universities are failing. There is talk about the poor educational outcomes apparent in our graduates, the out-of-control tuitions and crippling student loan debt. Attention is finally being paid to the enormous salaries for presidents and sports coaches, and the migrant worker status of the low-wage majority faculty. There are now movements to control tuition, to forgive student debt, to create more powerful ?assessment? tools, to offer ?free? university materials online, to combat adjunct faculty exploitation. But each of these movements focuses on a narrow aspect of a much wider problem, and no amount of ?fix? for these aspects individually will address the real reason that universities in America are dying.

To explain my perspective here, I need to go back in time. Let?s go back to post World War II, 1950s when the GI bill, and the affordability ? and sometimes free access ? to universities created an upsurge of college students across the country. This surge continued through the ?60s, when universities were the very heart of intense public discourse, passionate learning, and vocal citizen involvement in the issues of the times. It was during this time, too, when colleges had a thriving professoriate, and when students were given access to a variety of subject areas, and the possibility of broad learning. The Liberal Arts stood at the center of a college education, and students were exposed to philosophy, anthropology, literature, history, sociology, world religions, foreign languages and cultures. Of course, something else happened, beginning in the late fifties into the sixties ? the uprisings and growing numbers of citizens taking part in popular dissent ? against the Vietnam War, against racism, against destruction of the environment in a growing corporatized culture, against misogyny, against homophobia. Where did much of that revolt incubate? Where did large numbers of well-educated, intellectual, and vocal people congregate? On college campuses. Who didn?t like the outcome of the 60s? The corporations, the war-mongers, those in our society who would keep us divided based on our race, our gender, our sexual orientation.

I suspect that, given the opportunity, those groups would have liked nothing more than to shut down the universities. Destroy them outright. But a country claiming to have democratic values can?t just shut down its universities. That would reveal something about that country which would not support the image they are determined to portray ? that of a country of freedom, justice, opportunity for all. So, how do you kill the universities of the country without showing your hand? As a child growing up during the Cold War, I was taught that the communist countries in the first half of the 20th Century put their scholars, intellectuals and artists into prison camps, called ?re-education camps?. What I?ve come to realize as an adult is that American corporatism despises those same individuals as much as we were told communism did. But instead of doing anything so obvious as throwing them into prison, here those same people are thrown into dire poverty. The outcome is the same. Desperate poverty controls and ultimately breaks people as effectively as prison?..and some research says that it works even MORE powerfully.

So: here is the recipe for killing universities, and you tell ME if what I?m describing isn?t exactly what is at the root of all the problems of our country?s system of higher education. (Because what I?m saying has more recently been applied to K-12 public education as well.)

First, you defund public higher education.

Anna Victoria, writing in?Pluck Magazine, discusses this issue in a review of Christopher Newfield?s book,?Unmaking the Public University: ?In 1971, Lewis Powell (before assuming his post as a Supreme Court Justice) authored a memo, now known as the Powell Memorandum,?and sent it to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The title of the memo was ?Attack on the American Free Enterprise System,? and in it he called on corporate America to take an increased role in shaping politics, law, and education in the United States.? How would they do that? One, by increased lobbying and pressure on legislators to change their priorities. ?Funding for public universities comes from, as the term suggests, the state and federal government. Yet starting in the early 1980s, shifting state priorities forced public universities to increasingly rely on other sources of revenue. For example, in the University of Washington school system, state funding for schools decreased as a percentage of total public education budgets from 82% in 1989 to 51% in 2011.? That?s a loss of more than 1/3 of its public funding. But why this shift in priorities? U.C. Berkeley English professor, Christopher Newfield, in his new book?Unmaking the Public University?posits that conservative elites have worked to de-fund higher education explicitly because of its function in creating a more empowered, democratic, and multiracial middle class. His theory is one that blames explicit cultural concern, not financial woes, for the current decreases in funding. He cites the fact that California public universities were forced to reject 300,000 applicants because of lack of funding. Newfield explains that much of the motive behind conservative advocacy for de-funding of public education is racial, pro-corporate, and anti-protest in nature.

Again, from Victoria: ?(The) ultimate objective, as outlined in the (Lewis Powell) memo, was to purge respectable institutions such as the media, arts, sciences, as well as college campus themselves of left-wing thoughts. At the time, college campuses were seen as ?springboards for dissent,? as Newfield terms it, and were therefore viewed as publicly funded sources of opposition to the interests of the establishment. While it is impossible to know the extent to which this memo influenced the conservative political strategy over the coming decades, it is extraordinary to see how far the principles outlined in his memo have been adopted.?

Under the guise of many ?conflicts?, such as budget struggles, or quotas, de-funding was consistently the result. This funding argument also was used to re-shape the kind of course offerings and curriculum focus found on campuses. Victoria writes, ?Attacks on humanities curriculums, political correctness, and affirmative action shifted the conversation on public universities to the right, creating a climate of skepticism around state funded schools. State budget debates became platforms for conservatives to argue why certain disciplines such as sociology, history, anthropology, minority studies, language, and gender studies should be de-funded?? on one hand, through the argument that they were not offering students the ?practical? skills needed for the job market ? which was a powerful way to increase emphasis on what now is seen as vocational focus rather than actual higher education, and to de-value those very courses that trained and expanded the mind, developed a more complete human being, a more actively intelligent person and involved citizen. Another argument used to attack the humanities was ??their so-called promotion of anti-establishment sentiment. Gradually, these arguments translated into real- and often deep- cuts into the budgets of state university systems,? especially in those most undesirable areas that the establishment found to run counter to their ability to control the population?s thoughts and behavior. The idea of ?manufactured consent? should be talked about here ? because if you remove the classes and the disciplines that are the strongest in their ability to develop higher level intellectual rigor, the result is a more easily manipulated citizenry, less capable of deep interrogation and investigation of the establishment ?message?.

Second, . . .

THE RACE: After final debate, a mad rush to home

After Monday's final debate, just two weeks remain. Expect President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to supercharge their ground games in a last-ditch effort to close the deal with voters.

Tightening polls suggest neither one has been able to complete the job yet.

Polls often shrink just before a presidential election as undecided voters jump off the fence. And late-deciders often break for the challenger when an incumbent is running.

Debates have played an outsized role this year ? both in deciding the Republican primaries and now in bringing the presidential choice into sharper focus for many Americans.

But with no further debates and barring an unforeseen "October surprise," one of the few remaining uncertainties is the government's release of this month's jobs report just four days before the election.

The September report showed a sharp unemployment rate drop to 7.8 percent, dipping under 8 percent for the first time since the start of Obama's presidency. Was that an aberration or is the jobs picture really improving?

The October report could tell us ? although it won't matter to the many who have already voted early.

Romney joked that Obama's latest campaign slogan is "you're better off than you were four weeks ago."

Falling jobless rates helped both Presidents Ronald Reagan and Franklin D. Roosevelt win reelection, even though unemployment rates were still high ? but dropping. Momentum counts for a lot in politics.

Unemployment declined over the past year in eight of nine battleground states. Ohio added the most jobs. Wisconsin was the only battleground state to lose jobs.

But Romney's selection of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate is helping to make the state more competitive for Republicans.

Vice President Joe Biden campaigned Monday in Ohio and Ryan in Colorado ? both essential battlegrounds.

Jordan says it foils al-Qaida-linked terror plot

(AP) ? Jordanian authorities have arrested 11 suspected al-Qaida-linked militants for allegedly planning to attack shopping malls and Western diplomatic missions in the country, the government said Sunday.

The plot is the first to be unveiled since a triple hotel bombing in Amman almost seven years ago, which killed 60 people. Al-Qaida claimed responsibility for the attack, citing its rejection of Jordan's alliance with the United States and its 1994 peace treaty with Israel.

Jordanian officials and Arab diplomats have been voicing concern over stability in the kingdom, which lies at a precarious corner in the Middle East, neighboring hot spots Syria, Iraq and the Palestinian territories.

The officials and diplomats, insisting on anonymity because they are not allowed to make statements to the press, have warned of possible plots to destabilize the kingdom. They say militants seek to use its territory as they consolidate their foothold in Syria ? which lies on Jordan's northern border.

Announcing the foiled plot, government spokesman Sameeh Maaytah told an impromptu press conference that the suspects are all Jordanian and are in police custody.

"They were plotting deadly terror attacks on vital institutions, shopping centers and diplomatic missions," he said. "They sought to destabilize Jordan," he said. "They plotted against Jordan's national security."

Jordan's state TV broadcast headshots of the suspects ? all in their 20s and 30s with most of them sporting long beards ? identifying them as "militants."

A statement by Jordanian intelligence said an investigation showed that the group "adopts the ideology of al-Qaida" and that it nicknamed its terror plot as "9/11 the second" ? a reference to the Amman hotel blasts, which happened on Nov. 9, 2005.

Since June, the suspects have been surveying targets across the country, bringing in rockets from Syria to use in the alleged plot, the statement said.

The militants sought to carry out their attacks in stages, it added, with initial attacks on shopping centers and foreigners in Jordanian hotels, followed by more deadly strikes with powerful explosives and chemicals on Western diplomatic missions and unspecified "vital national sites."

One attack involved firing rockets at a district in the Jordanian capital that houses the U.S., British and other diplomatic missions as well as housing for expats and Western diplomats.

The statement said al-Qaida "explosive experts" based in Iraq and elsewhere have assisted the suspects with manufacturing home-made explosives.

The statement did not say when the suspects were arrested, but Maaytah ? the government spokesman ? said Jordanian intelligence apprehended them in the past few days.

Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate | recipe from FatFree Vegan Kitchen

Spiced Pumpkin Hot Chocolate

Welcome to Weekend Quickies?quick recipes that won?t cut into your weekend relaxation time. Today?s ridiculously easy recipe is brought to you courtesy of my last recipe, Mary?s Pumpkin Walnut Muffins, and more particularly by the half cup of pumpkin that is left over from a 15-ounce can after you make that recipe. Here?s a delicious drink that uses that leftover pumpkin and takes only about 10 minutes to prepare.

Imagine pumpkin pie and hot chocolate all mixed up together and poured into a mug and you?ve got this drink. Actually, it tastes better than that sounds! It?s spicy and sweet and warming on a chilly October day. I dressed mine up with a little foamy soymilk that I whipped up with a simple milk frother. It doesn?t work well with all soymilks, but the store-brand vanilla soymilk that I used foamed up quickly and even made little whipped cream-like peaks. You may have to test several brands before you find one that foams up that thick (hint: Silk Vanilla in the aseptic boxes does not work).

Also, if it?s not ?curl up with a hot drink? weather in your neighborhood, you can easily turn this beverage into a pudding with the addition of corn starch and a few extra minutes of cooking time. See the notes in the recipe for more details.

Spiced Pumpkin Hot Chocolate

Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate

I served this with a dollop of frothy soymilk on top.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups non-dairy milk
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 3/4 ? 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • stevia or other sweetener to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients except sweetener in blender. Blend at medium speed until smooth. Check sweetness and add sweetener to taste; blend once more.
  2. Pour into a saucepan or microwaveable container and heat, stirring at regular intervals, until steaming. Pour into two mugs and serve.

Notes

You can easily take this from a beverage to a dessert by making it into pudding. Add 2 1/2 tablespoons of cornstarch to the mixture in the blender and blend well. Heat on the stove or in the microwave, stirring constantly (or once every minute in the microwave), until it boils and thickens. Pour into 4 dessert bowls and refrigerate until set.

Preparation time: 5 minute(s) | Cooking time: 5 minute(s)

Scout abuse files release sparks public interest

The Boy Scouts of America fought to keep those files confidential. (AP Photo/Greg Wahl-Stephens)

(AP) ? A website with files showing the Boy Scouts of America's cover-up of decades of sexual abuse is generating interest from people wanting to know who the alleged abusers are and whether people who molested them as Scouts are in the files.

Release of the files has also prompted a debate on the Boy Scouts' Facebook page. Some people said they'd never allow their children to be involved in the organization and criticized the secrecy of the files. Others described positive experiences in the Scouts for themselves or their children, saying the organization's efforts to prevent abuse have improved significantly.

The 14,500 pages of Scout files, from 1959-1985, were posted Thursday on the website of Kelly Clark, the Portland attorney who used the files as evidence in a 2010 lawsuit he won against the Scouts.

The website got more than 200,000 hits within the first few hours of the files' posting, crashing the site.

Clark said his firm has received about four dozen emails from people about the documents. About half came from people who say they were abused when they were in the Scouts and were interested in filing lawsuits.

Some of the emails have given details about alleged abuse, Clark said.

There are also emails from people who tell of other alleged perpetrators who are not in the files.

"We had many people say thank you for posting the documents," Clark said.

At least six people have contacted reporters for The Associated Press with questions about reporting sex abuse when they were in the Scouts. None agreed to speak to the AP on the record.

The Scouts have said they plan to review every file from 1965 to the present and, in cases where it's unclear whether the incident was reported to police, the Scouts said they'll contact authorities.

Deron Smith, spokesman for the Scouts, said Thursday the organization is currently looking through those files to find cases of "good-faith suspicions" so they can be reported to police. The Scout files are filled with unsubstantiated allegations.

In their own review of the files that were released on Thursday, the Scouts found that law enforcement had been involved in about two-thirds of the cases. The organization is going through the remainder to find cases where there seem to be good reasons to alert law authorities.

The Scouts have apologized for not following up. The files were created for the purpose of registering Scout leaders, Smith said, and were considered internal, confidential documents, which is why they weren't always shared with authorities.

Attorney Paul Mones, Clark's colleague, said uploading the files "democratized" information that was only available to lawyers and the Scouts.

"It's a testament to the new generation of communication," Mones said.

The files have been maintained by the Scouts since soon after their founding in 1910. They consist of memos from local and national Scout executives, handwritten letters from victims and their parents and newspaper clippings about legal cases.

The files contain details about proven molesters, but also unsubstantiated allegations. People paging through the files would find both. Clark says there are undoubtedly some people in the files who were wrongly accused, and the Scouts point out that many cases of abuse were dealt with properly.

For those who say they were molested, statutes of limitations in most states would prevent many people from filing lawsuits or criminal charges, Clark said. But in some cases ? like a first-degree sexual assault in New York ? the state has set no time limit.

Legal experts say that aside from the statute of limitations, it could be difficult to bring charges against suspected molesters in the files because victims need to be found, and they need to be persuaded to give evidence.

"Trying to prosecute a case that old, you need to have a willing victim," said Josh Marquis, district attorney for Clatsop County in Oregon.

Victims of abuse years ago may be unwilling to come forward because it would create upheaval in their lives, Marquis said.

With the files now available, law enforcement and the public can do their own checking, something David Clohessy, director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said should have been available to those groups all along.

"The Scouts have got to expose, list and severely punish every former employee or volunteer who ignored or concealed child sex crimes," Clohessy said. "Nothing will have a quicker and more long-lasting impact of changing the culture of recklessness and secrecy."

Facebook, Microsoft Helping U.K. Government Select And Train A ...

Computer science teaching in U.K. schools has been broken for years, having a soft focus on ICT teaching ? i.e. showing kids how to use computer software ? rather than teaching them how to use computers to create software. Earlier this year a U.K. government Minister described IT lessons as ?catastrophically boring?. Those remarks followed some choice words from?Google?s Eric Schmidt?last year when he warned the nation was throwing away its computing heritage?by focusing on arts teaching at the expense of computer science.

Since then, the government has been knocking heads together to try to get a handle on the problem ? last?year it announced plans to develop new ?IT-centric? qualifications, to?teach schoolkids core principles of computer programming, and in January the Education Secretary reiterated their intention to scrap the derided ICT curriculum?and replace it with a new computer science curriculum. It?s currently carrying out a curriculum review to come up with a new program of study for the subject ? with an all-new computer science curriculum due to land in September 2014.

Today the government has revealed another plank in the strategy ? announcing?measures to attract a new generation of computer science teachers that have the skills to teach bona fide?computing, rather than run lessons in how to use Microsoft Word. Slightly ironic, then, that it?s getting help from Microsoft to overhaul IT teaching.?Professor Chris Bishop, Distinguished Scientist at Microsoft Research, did not note this irony in his supporting statement on the announcement

Microsoft is passionate about improving the way that we teach technology in schools, but also how we use technology to teach. As founding members of the Computing at School working group, we?ve been working to inspire both teachers and young people about the importance of computer science for a number of years.

Scholarships such as those announced today will be vital in ensuring that the UK maintains a healthy pipeline of computer science talent, which can only be a positive thing for this country?s future prosperity.

As well as working with Microsoft, the government is getting help from Facebook, IBM, BT and other companies for the new Computer Science Initial Teacher Training course ? which replaces the current Information and Communications Technology courses (which have now lost their government funding). Facebook, Microsoft et al have also been involved in helping draw up a document?that sets out?minimum requirements for subject knowledge for budding computer science teachers applying to the new training course.

Around 50 scholarships worth ?20,000 each will be available in the first year with the aim of attracting top graduates into IT teaching. The scholarships will be open to applications from any graduate with a 2.1 or first class degree ? again, somewhat ironic, being as the humanities graduates so derided by Schmidt will apparently be able to apply to becoming computer science teachers.?However?applications will also have to demonstrate they have an understanding of a variety of key computer science concepts and processes?in order to be accepted on the training ? such as algorithms and computational models.

A spokesman for the Department for Education told me the reason the government is not stipulating that applicants to the teaching course have a computing degree is to ensure suitable candidates who hold other degrees, such as in mathematics, aren?t excluded.

Facebook and co are also likely to be involved in the selection process of teachers for the scholarship ? helping to interview potential candidates, said the spokesman. ?Facebook?s?Simon Milner, Director of Public Policy for UK & Ireland, noted in a statement: ?It is a positive step to help get high quality computer science teachers in schools, and therefore ensure more young people gain the right skills to join and lead our digital industries.?

Existing ICT teachers are also being targeted for upskilling by another government initiative announced today which will see 500 existing ICT teachers provided with computer science training in the first year of the program. This scheme is being part funded through a ?150,000 government grant.

Evernote Pays For Its Employees To Have Their ... - Business Insider

Tech companies are starting to get pretty creative with employee perks, and they're oozing into workers' lives outside of the office.

Evernote is a company the helps you access notes, photos and more from any device, and it's been valued by investors at $1 billion. Last year, it started giving employees one of the best perks yet.

Now, twice per month, its 250 workers are able to get their houses cleaned on Evernote. The idea came from CEO Phil Libin's wife.

"[The house cleaning] eliminates a decision I have to make,? one of Evernote's employees told the New York Times. ?It?s just happening and it?s good, and I don?t have to think about it.?

?Happy workers make better products,? Libin justifies the perk. He also offers employees $1,000 per year to take a real vacation and travel somewhere. ?The output we care about has everything to do with your state of mind.?

Commodity Market Update - 19.10.12

Energy: Sloppy action in Crude oil today with prices finishing pretty much in line with where they started the session. For the last 7 sessions prices have been in a sideways trading range and today was no different. I see resistance just above $93 and am still looking for a breakdown in the coming weeks. RBOB lost 1.35% today trading lower now for the last 5 consecutive sessions. A settlement under $2.70 in December should lead to a quick move under $2.60 and back to the 100 day MA; currently at $2.5975. Heating oil traded under its 18 day MA for the first time in 2 weeks but support held up. I see the tide shifting and see no solid support until $3.05. Natural gas gained 2.2% closing near its recent highs about 10 cents under $4. I may be the minority but I?m looking for prices to back off thinking we get one solid sell off before we build in a winter premium.

Stock Indices: The S&P failed to hold onto its gains finishing slightly in the red just above 1450. Looking at the price action over the last moth there appears to be a triple top in the making as all previous attempts to penetrate 1460 have failed. I think it will take confirmation of its short term MA but a trade lower is still the call. As opposed to picking a top it is advised to get confirmation though. Doji star in the daily Dow chart with prices dancing on the up sloping tend line. The 13500 level in December futures has acted as stiff resistance in recent weeks and I expect that to continue. A close under 13375 is needed to signal an interim top?trade accordingly.

Metals: Gold lost 0.42% as prices appear to be taking a breath around the $1750 level. I see resistance at $1760 and the next leg lower should test the 50 day MA in my eyes at $1719. I?ve told traders for weeks now not to rule out a trade under $1700/ounce. A bearish engulfing candle in silver today with prices lower by 1.10%. Prices are off just better than 6% in the last 2 weeks. $31.75 represents a 38.2% Fibonacci retracement though $30/75 is my ultimate target which is the 50% level.

Softs: Cocoa appreciated 2.22% to close above the down sloping trend line that has acted as resistance since the highs in early September. This may sound familiar as I predicted this in recent post. From here I am expecting a tradable bounce that lifts prices to 2550/2600 in December. Sugar is within 1.5% of its low trade this year but that alone is not a reason to buy. I am waiting for signs of an interim low before advising clients to re-establish bullish trade in March contracts. A 4 1/2 cent trading range in cotton represent a $2250 range but I would have expected more upside follow through after yesterday limit close and prices closed unchanged today. My target is the 200 day MA just under 2 cents from the settlement but I am looking for a sell signal from higher ground and would not be long currently. Coffee lost 1.8% dragging prices to 6 week lows as prices are slowly making their way to contract lows which I do think will happen. Today?s close is within 3.25% of those levels reached in mid-June.

Treasuries: In the last 3 days prices in 30-yr bonds have broken down better than 3 points dragging prices back near 146?00. I missed this leg looking for a higher sales price. We could see prices drift lower to the levels in mid-September but I am currently on the sidelines with clients. 10-yr notes also exhibited the same pattern breaking down in recent sessions, trading to 1 month lows. The path of least resistance is lower in both instruments but I?ll be absent.

Livestock: Live cattle continue to inch higher gaining 4 consecutive days as prices are approaching overbought levels.? The easy money has been made on longs as I will be looking for short entries in the coming sessions. The rising tide has lifted feeder cattle prices as well with January closing over $1.50 the last 2 days. Resistance that has held the last 2 months comes in just above this level so expect limited upside in my eyes. In a little over 5 weeks prices of lean hogs have appreciated 12% but prices should be met with selling very soon. I see limited upside but prefer to see a settlement under the 9 day MA before calling a top; that level in December is 78.35.

Grains: December corn closed up just over 2% as prices make their way back to their 50 day MA. That pivot point served as resistance last week comes in at $7.66. Above the 50 day MA the next resistance is eyed at $8/bushel. I still think there is risk to the downside and see support at $7.35. After bouncing off $14.90 it appears we could see some appreciation in November soybeans. First prices must get through the 20 day MA but above today?s highs $16-16.20 seems to be a reasonable upside target short term. After finding support just under $8.50 in December wheat we?ve seen a slight pickup in prices. Though wheat will continue to lag appreciation in outside markets could lift prices back near $9 in my opinion.?

Currencies:? The dollar found support again today at 79.00 but sentiment remains bearish as long as prices remain under their 20 day MA; currently at 79.70. Aggressive traders can re-establish bearish plays in the Cable; with stops above the 20 day MA; currently at 1.6110. Another sale in my book is the Loonie. I like the recent chart action and see a trade under par in the coming weeks. I?ve advised clients to look at purchasing at or just out of the money put options. The steadiest performer has been the Yen dropping 5 out of the last 6 sessions. Those short trail stops and protect profit.?
