Panasonic teams up with NHK on 145-inch 8K Super Hi-Vision plasma TV
We thought the 8K 85-inch Super Hi-Vision LCD we saw during CES was impressive, but Japanese broadcaster NHK is already looking to surpass that by going even bigger. To that end it worked with Panasonic (above: that's Panasonic's Keishi Kubota on the left, Yoshio Ito of NHK on the right) to create this 145-inch prototype plasma, unveiled today as an example of the kind of displays we can expect to see once broadcasts jump to the higher resolution some day. The world's first self-illuminating Super Hi-Vision TV, it features every pixel of its expected 8K resolution -- 7,680 x 4,320. After working for months on smaller (only 85- or 103-inch) 4K plasmas, the two companies had to come up with an entirely new drive method for the display that works by scanning the pixels vertically to achieve a uniform picture quality. The NHK plans to show off the new display at its open house in May, although we're a bit more interested to see if we can watch the Olympics on it this summer. Check the gallery below for a few more pictures from DigInfo.TV's Ryo Osuga, or hit the more coverage link for a breakdown of the difficulties encountered in building a high resolution display that's this massive.

'Dark Shadows' Sneak Peek Reveals Johnny Depp's De-Fanging Plan
New featurette is dedicated to late star of original soap, Jonathan Frid.

With just two weeks left until the big release of "Dark Shadows," Warner Bros. is stoking the coals of excitement with a new featurette that brings not only behind-the-scenes interviews and footage, but offers up an important new plot detail from the film.
"The legend of the vampire has been told for centuries, capturing the dark shadows of our imagination and inspiring filmmakers and actors to breathe new life into the undead," a voice-over reminds us at the top of the clip. "But there's never been a vampire like Barnabas Collins."
Depp said the idea to do the film came naturally to him and Burton, who have worked together on eight films. "I'd always been sort of attracted to horror films and things like that, even as a very young kid," Depp explains. "I said, 'Tim, we should do a vampire movie together.' "
And when Johnny Depp and Tim Burton decide to do something, it has a way of getting done.
A large part of the featurette focuses on the history of vampires in movies and reminds us that one of cinema's great vampires, Christopher Lee, is featured in "Shadows."
"One of my favorite moments I've ever been able to experience in a film was I got to hypnotize Dracula; I got to hypnotize Christopher Lee," Depp says. "He was, you know, the great Dracula."
To get into character as Barnabas Collins, Depp didn't stray far from the source material. "For Barnabas, everywhere I searched character-wise, I kept coming back to Jonathan Frid," the actor explains. "He really did something beautiful with that character on the 'Dark Shadows' series back in the '60s and early '70s."
Frid, who cameos in the film and is shown arriving at a party at Collinwood in the featurette, died earlier this month in his native Canada. The clip closes with an "In Memoriam" dedication to the classically trained actor, who maintained a close relationship with the show's fans by appearing at "Shadows" conventions and readings as recently as 2011, before his health began to decline.
The clip features some great new scenes from the film, including a fun bit where Depp's Barnabas seeks advice from Chloe Moretz's Carolyn Stoddard on "the art of courting a woman of this time," but importantly introduces a major plot twist that we wondered (all the way back in October!) whether Burton would include in his film: Barnabas' attempt to de-fang himself with the help of Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter) and become mortal again to pursue a romantic relationship with Bella Heathcote's Victoria Winters.
"If a man can become a monster, then a monster can become a man," Barnabas says in a voice-over while Dr. Hoffman surveys large blood-filled beakers and Depp sits with IV lines running from him. It's a story line carried over directly from both the original soap and its short-lived '90s remake. (Indeed, this particular story line was the focus of NBC's revival starring Ben Cross and Joanna Going.)
"By tapping into vampires, witches, ghosts, the reason they're powerful is because we all kind of experience those feelings on some level," Burton says of the film. "It's something that remains in our popular culture because it's strangely part of our everyday lives."
Just two weeks to go, "Dark Shadows" fans! Are you excited for the flick? Let us know in the comments!

In Ticketing increases options for venues and promoters, as long as they're using iOS
Converting a cellphone into a credit card reader is nothing new, but transforming one into a box office for live events could shake things up a bit -- or, at least provide a bit of friendly competition for NFC-based alternatives. In Ticketing has just launched InHand Box Office software for use at live events. The company claims to be one of the greener ticketing outfits out there, and plans to turn your iPhone or iPod touch into a device capable of wirelessly processing payments (and printing out paper receipts, unlike Square or PayPal Here) at independently run concerts or festivals. Potentially reducing time spent in line and preventing congestion at the entrance translates into more people inside the venue, and using your phone instead of a difficult-to-establish credit card merchant account should reduce the friction in throwing such an event. As long as you tend to carry the appropriate iDevice with In Ticketing's new app installed, you can marry it to that iAPS Sled you see above to create your own personal CC processing machine. The only issues? Convincing Gotye to play your house party instead of Coachella next year, and that awkward lack of support for Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone.

Google sells SketchUp to Trimble Navigation for undisclosed sum
While we're probably more accustomed to Google buying assets than selling them 'round here, every now and again the search giant does shed some skin. El Goog's 3D modeling platform, SketchUp, is to be sold to Trimble Navigation for an undisclosed sum reports Reuters. Trimble says it's hoping to use the acquisition to enhance its office-to-field platform. The two firms will also work together to develop SketchUp's online repository of 3D models for designers to use, share and contribute to. SketchUp's blog reassures users that the free version won't change under the move. The deal should get the final nod in Q2 this year.

Instattoo iOS app lets you randomly generate tattoos, can't turn back time
Interested in getting a tattoo but disappointed by your lack of completely random options? Then Instattoo might be just the app for you. Released today for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, it lets you automatically generate a one-of-a-kind tattoo with just a few taps and swipes, which you can then print out and get transferred to your own body with the aid of a skilled professional -- but not before you share it on your social network of choice, of course. You can get a taste of what you might be getting yourself into in the pair of videos after the break, and grab the app in the App Store now for $5 if you're not dissuaded.

Record Store Day: earth's vinyl days
On?April 21,?the fifth annual?Record Store Day?will get off to a rockin' start when doors open in about 1,000 record stores in some 20 countries.
You remember records, right? Not only are the big 12-inch albums and 7-inch 45s still among us, but so are their landlords, old-fashioned independent record stores, which celebrate their own special day every spring. On April 21, the fifth annual Record Store Day will get off to a rockin' start when doors open in about 1,000 record stores in some 20 countries.
Skip to next paragraphFrom Tulsa to Tokyo, San Diego to Sydney, the gritty neighborhood purveyors of the petroleum platter will party with contests, free giveaways, in-store performances by local faves and big stars, and exclusive limited-edition 45 and LP releases. Among those are new singles by Coldplay, Florence + the Machine, Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire, comedian Jimmy Fallon, and many more. Exclusive Record Store Day LPs will include new 12-inch vinyl pressings from Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and The Black Keys, and rarities from jazz icons Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck.
Billboard magazine attributed a seismic 182,000 unit sales to last April's Record Store Day. Rocker Jack White exhorts the rock troops to "show respect for the tangible music that you've dedicated your careers and lives to, and help It from becoming nothing more than disposable digital data."
And speaking of analog, music producer Gary Calamar and Billboard writer Phil Gallo have penned a 240-page companion piece to the annual event, Record Store Days: From Vinyl to Digital and Back Again. It combines a timeline of the evolution of recording media ? from Edison's wax cylinders to today's MP3 files ? with affectionate portraits and reminiscences of America's iconic record shops and chains, some now defunct, some just plain funky. We meet up in the listening booth at Hollywood's long-gone Wallich's Music City to spin the latest from Nat King Cole and Elvis Presley before skipping a half century ahead to pack in like sardines with adoring fans at an in-store performance by Sir Paul McCartney at Amoeba Music, the largest record store in the world. (It's also known as "Godzilla" by the scores of indie record stores it has driven out of business.)
Dusty Groove of Chicago, Denver's Twist & Shout, Grimey's of Nashville, and Minneapolis's Electric Fetus won't hold out forever. Make a pilgrimage April 21 and pay your respects. To locate an indie record store near you, go to www.recordstoreday.com/Venues.

Bikini News - Celebrity Yoga Coach Gwen Lawrence Spills On How ...
Gwen Lawrence is the instructor for five New York pro teams, including the New York Giants. She has several online yoga classes on?GaiamTV.com.
Congratulations for getting to Part 3 of our ?Get ready for summer fitness?!? The days of waif-like, boney bodies are out. It is all about strong, sexy curves ? think Sofia Vergara, Kim Kardashian, and the original booty goddess, Jennifer Lopez.
Let?s talk about how to get that shapely back view like Nicki Minaj. It?s pretty simple: commit to squats.? No need to do them with heavy weights in hand. Get off the couch, stand in front your computer, iPad, or iPhone and watch your favorite GaiamTV.com documentary, and do squats for 2-3 minutes straight. Don?t worry about counting ? just be sure to keep good form, and watch those glutes take shape.
To perform:
- Squat with feet hip-width apart and parallel
- Keep the back flat, heart out
- Bend your knees, being sure the knee stays over the toes to keep the knee safe
- Try ?to go as deep as you feel comfortable so thighs are parallel to the floor
- Do the movements slow and steady
- Keep breathing consistently, in through the nose and out through the mouth
- Go as low to the floor as you can without lifting your heels
- Vary angles of the feet to target different angles of the glutes
Want more? Don?t add weights- just add a plyomeric jump when returning to standing position to get the heart pumping.
Need a little more instruction? GaiamTV.com is always here to lend a hand and keep you on track for your fitness goals. I personally love these videos:?Jillian Michaels Killer Buns & Thighs, Mari Winsor?s Lower Body Pilates, Strength Building Yoga.
One more thing I would be remiss to leave out ? if you want a healthy body you need to take care of it wholly, so don?t forget about strong, solid eating habits. Everyone wants to lose weight. Whether it?s five or thirty pounds, Americans are infatuated with their weight. If you are like most people, dissatisfied with how you?ve tried to lose weight in the past, the system of Ayurveda can show you how to lose weight gracefully. Diets that ignore nature?s variety ritually fail. You must stick to a diet that is a way of life, something that you enjoy, not something that you jump on and off of. ?Ayurveda helps you enjoy permanent weight loss. Find it on GaiamTV.com!
Good luck and stay inspired!

Sarkozy targets far-right in bid to win runoff
PARIS (AP) ? President Nicolas Sarkozy starkly laid out his path to re-election Monday: He will be plunging deep into far-right territory to hunt the votes he needs to beat Socialist challenger Francois Hollande in the runoff.
A day after Hollande won a slim upper hand in the first round of voting, Sarkozy candidly ogled voters of the far-right National Front whose candidate, Marine Le Pen, placed a solid third. She gave the party its highest-ever score, nearly 18 percent ? close to one-in-five voters and the biggest surprise of Sunday's first round vote.
Le Pen and her anti-immigration party want to pull France out of the euro currency, reinstate border controls, crack down on immigrants and stamp out what she claims is the Islamization of France.
"The word 'protectionism' isn't a dirty word," Sarkozy said Monday during a rousing speech in Saint-Cyr-Sur-Loire, near Tours, southwest of Paris.
Protecting the French identity, French civilization, French borders, French workers, French youth, French retirees were all on Sarkozy's agenda ? and all are themes dear to the National Front.
Sarkozy and Hollande, both 57, used their first post-election speeches to lure far-right voters to their respective camps ahead of the May 6 final round. But Hollande did so more softly.
The math is brutal. Hollande won 28.6 percent of Sunday's vote, Sarkozy won 27.2 percent and both need votes from Le Pen's far right to climb over 50 percent ? but mostly Sarkozy. Hollande is expected to get many of the backers of far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon who won 11 percent. The 9 percent who voted for centrist candidate Francois Bayrou are also in play.
Sarkozy named the National Front, and in a bid to destigmatize those who vote for the far-right party, said he respects them.
On the left some people "hold their noses," he said. "I want to say that we have heard them (the far right) and know how to respond with precise commitments."
The commitment he clearly named was tightening French borders ? with or without other European countries ? to keep them from becoming a "sieve" for immigrants and others.
"Europe must change so as not to be perceived as a threat but as a protection," he said.
For his part, Hollande said some voters cast ballots for Le Pen because they feel the system has left them behind.
"We have to look further for voters," Hollande said in a speech in Quimper, in the western region of Brittany. "Women and men who don't know where to go ... go toward the extreme."
Both candidates warned about the spread of populism around Europe ? what Sarkozy called a "crisis vote" by a population hurt by the effects of the debt crisis and left behind in a globalized world.
Sarkozy even waved the red flag of fear.
"If we change nothing, if we don't agree on new rules, we risk taking the tragic path of the 1930s," he said, referring to the rise of Nazism.
Voter frustration with the status quo and with the EU fed a rise of support for extremes at both ends of the political scale, with nearly 30 percent of France's 44 million voters backing candidates of the far right and left.
Wooing Le Pen's supporters is a more difficult task. She has said in the past she won't give followers instructions on how to vote on May 6.
Le Pen outpolled her father, firebrand Jean-Marie Le Pen, the party founder who reached the final round in 2002 presidential elections against then-President Jacques Chirac.
"The strength of the populist extreme right shows that there is all over Europe a rise of populism as a result of the economic crisis," said political analyst Dominique Moisi.
Sunday's voting results have profound consequences not only for the fate of France, but of Europe itself. And as the victor strives to steer a course out of economic turmoil, he may find himself haunted by populist promises made in courting the fringes.
If Hollande wins the runoff, he will become France's first Socialist president since Francois Mitterrand left office in 1995. Polls taken Sunday night continued to show Hollande is likely to best Sarkozy in their head-to-head matchup by around 10 percentage points.
Hollande, whose victory worried financial markets Monday because of his pledges to boost government spending, vowed to cut France's huge debts, boost growth and unite the French after Sarkozy's divisive first term. He also favors a 75 percent tax on the wealthy.
Sarkozy, meanwhile, is battling to avoid becoming France's first one-term president since Valery Giscard d'Estaing lost to Socialist Francois Mitterrand in 1981. Sarkozy has said he'll pull out of politics if he loses.
Whatever happens to France's leadership will affect the rest of the 27-nation European Union, since it's the eurozone's second-largest economy after Germany.
Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel ? a tandem that some call "Merkozy" ? have championed a treaty on budget austerity for the 17-nation eurozone. But Hollande wants the treaty to also address economic growth, not just cost-cutting.
In Brussels, EU officials warned Sarkozy against flirting too much with the extreme right and sacrificing hard-fought European unity built on the ashes of World War II.
"All the commissioners have appealed to all politicians in Europe to be careful because there is a threat from radical parties," said EU Commission spokesman Olivier Bailly. Extreme-right values "are fundamentally against the ideals that have led to the construction of Europe."
